FILM PROJECT
Are you are a young person living on the South Coast, Southern Highlands, or Batemans Bay areas, with a passion for digital storytelling and filmmaking? We want to hear from you.

We want to hear your stories about your life, living on the South Coast during recent challenges of flood, fire and pandemic.
What has been your experience? How has living in a regional area helped? What has made you angry or sad? What's made you laugh?
We want to hear your story, whether it's a comedy, drama, tragedy or doco. This project will help you turn your story idea into a short film.
You are eligible for this project if you live on the South Coast, Southern Highlands, Kangaroo Valley, Kiama, Bateman's Bay or Far South Coast regions, AND you're aged between 16 and 21 years (or there about!). The project will provide mentorship from industry professionals through the process of filmmaking.

Program details
- Duration of this project is 12 weeks from late January 2023.
- Learn the process of filmmaking from beginning to end, from industry professionals.
- Online workshops will be hosted in the evenings one night per week.
- Workshops include both face-to-face and online sessions focussing on short film.
- Participants will receive industry mentorship in story development, scriptwriting, production planning, filming, post-production and screening.
- On completion, short films will be published and shared across web platforms including short film festivals reaching local, State, national and international audiences.
- Participation in the program is free of charge (no cost) for ten selected young aspiring filmmakers.

COPYRIGHT NOTICE
Southland Creative Inc will use commercially reasonable efforts to exploit any rights it has been granted to commercialise the Short Films.
After the film making workshop program has been completed, film making participants grant Southland Creative Inc a Non-Exclusive License to use, promote and display the Film in perpetuity, in whole or in part.
Participants will retain full copyright of their films. Southland Creative Inc will retain rights to publish, for the use of Promotion, Publicity, Viewership, Media and Audience Engagement across digital websites, social media channels, outdoor public screening events.
We may also nominate the short films for short film events, festivals, competitions, online events and potential approach broadcasters in partnership with the film maker.
The Filmmaker agrees to indemnify Southland Creative Inc and hold them harmless from any damages, liabilities, losses, costs, expenses, obligations or claims (including, without limitation, reasonable outside attorneys’ fees and costs) arising out of the breach of Filmmaker’s agreements, obligations, representations and warranties under this Agreement, including, without limitation, those representations and warranties under the Copyright Act 1968.

COVID-19 SAFE WORK PRACTICE
Southland Creative Inc work to NSW Health and Workplace standards, this means that film making workshops and mentoring may require participants and mentors to use online video conferencing software to reduce health risks during the pandemic.
CODE OF CONDUCT
Southland Creative Inc provide this film making workshop program free of cost or charges to the selected participants. We work to a standard of providing professional mentoring and relationships between our team and all participants. We celebrate all human cultures, backgrounds, languages and abilities.
Southland Creative Inc do not tolerate inappropriate behavior. We provide a safe and respectful working environment for everyone involved.
Participants are reminded that many young aspiring film makers have missed out on participating in this film making program, by agreeing to this cultural contract you understand and acknowledge that your selection to participate requires you to complete the full program and publish your short-film at the end of the program.

FAQs — Film Associated Questions
Will I get to keep my film at the end?
Yes, your finished product is yours to keep! We just ask for screening rights for the first 12 months after the project has completed. (We will use it inspire other creative initiatives.) These rights will be further explained to successful applicants.
What will my budget be?
There are no budget restrictions for the film you want to make, but our professional mentors will work with you to ensure you can complete your film in the time constraints of 13 weeks. It's also a good idea to remember that some very good films have been made for less that $200!
Can I do this course while I sit my HSC in 2023?
Yes. Last year we had several participants who successfully juggled their commitments in year 12 with the filmmaking project. Many used our mentorship to help them complete their HSC major work (note this is allowed because you're not paying us and we're not doing the work for you; just providing guidance and professional advice in the same way your teachers do at school).
Where will the workshops take place?
The program will begin with a face-to-face orientation at our office in Culburra Beach, with the rest of the workshops held online, one night per week. We will sort out availability and access once participants are selected. Filming sessions and screenings will be face-to-face.
Will I need permission from actors I use?
Yes, you will need to gain written permission from anyone who appears in your film. We recommend you ask everyone sign a release form before you begin any shoots. You will also need to ask permission from any artists whose music, sound, or work you use in your film. More information about this will be available once the project starts.
Have you done this kind of thing before?
Yes! We ran a similar project in 2020, with nine short films launched in 2021 (after some pandemic interruptions), all made by young legends on the South Coast. Many are now working in the industry, and some have gone on to formal study in filmmaking and storytelling. You can see their films on this website.
What if I have no filmmaking experience?
No worries! All you really need is a story to tell and a willingness to learn new skills. A passion for filmmaking, movies, cinematography, composition, writing, or any combination of these will be a plus, too. Our mentors are all qualified professionals working in the industry, and are excited to be able to share their experience with young people.
What do you mean by 'culture'?
We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants from diverse backgrounds and have found themselves calling on their cultural influences in a difficult year. Or, maybe you are living away from home and the South Coast has grounded you during such strange times.
What do you mean by 'regional area'?
This project is funded by the NSW Office or Regional Youth, which creates opportunities for young people living outside of big cities. To be eligible for this project, you need to live somewhere between Kiama and Eden, along the easy coast or towards the Southern Highlands. If you're not sure, we suggest you submit an EOI and see what happens!
